In an earlier article we demonstrated how electric and hybrid vehicles can save you money making your business more profitable over a few short years. This short article is on the environmental case for electric and hybrid vehicles.
I’m still paying for my diesel minibus
A switch to hybrid and electric vehicles is something many are considering but for PH and taxi drivers the decision relates to income not just lifestyle. Many in the trade want to play a positive role in protecting our planet’s future. But many are part-way through financing a diesel or petrol vehicle and the time isn’t right to change.
We are not suggesting that all drivers immediately trade in their diesels and petrol vehicles today—after all The Taxi Shop sells new diesels and will for some time—but a change is happening, and it pays to be informed.
What are the options?
Fully electric cars, such as the MG EV or the Dynamo Electric Taxi, can be charged at home or at a growing network of charge stations. They produce no emissions, so obviously they are greener, cleaner all round than traditional fuel combustion engines.
A plug-in hybrid combines a small electric motor and a battery with a modest range of around 30 miles, with a modern petrol or diesel engine. When in electric mode there are no emissions.
Many hybrid vehicles, such as the Suzuki Swace SZ-T 1.8 Petrol Hybrid, charge their batteries via ‘regenerative braking’. When a driver decelerates or uses the brakes, hybrids generate power in the form of electricity that is stored in the battery for later use.
At lower speeds the electric motor powers the car, making it attractive for stop-start city driving. The petrol engine cuts in as speed increases, or when the driver accelerates hard.
Drivers can make a difference
Lower emissions will reduce greenhouse gases, which are the main contributing factor to climate change, including the higher average temperatures and more frightening, volatile weather.
We must accept renewable sources of electricity as the future in the mid-term. In the short term we can assess the options, learn about the technology, and choose the moment to make the switch.
This is the second in a short series on electric and hybrid vehicles for the taxi trade.
